2 arrested in St. Paul teen's death after party

Two men were arrested Tuesday in connection with the death of a 14-year-old St. Paul girl who police say had been at a Sunday party in Burnsville where she was given alcohol, marijuana and a drink made of pop and codeine cough syrup.

At about 10 a.m. Monday, St. Paul police responded to a call on the 200 block of Charles Avenue, said Sgt. Paul Paulos. The caller, identified as a parent, told the dispatcher that the girl was unresponsive.

Police found her in an upstairs bedroom. The girl, whose name was not released Tuesday, was declared dead at the scene.

Police later learned that a 17-year-old female friend was being treated at Regions Hospital in St. Paul for a possible overdose.

During an investigation, police determined that the pair were at the party on Sunday night, where they were given alcohol, marijuana and a drink made of soda and codeine cough syrup that has various street names, including "lean," "purple drank," and "dirty Sprite."

One of the men turned himself in on Tuesday, Paulos said. The other was arrested without incident.

The 17-year-old remained in the hospital Tuesday night in stable condition.

The two men, ages 19 and 25, were being held in the Ramsey County jail. The Star Tribune generally does not name suspects before they are charged.
