A 32-year-old Eagan man has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for inflicting injuries on his newborn daughter ranging from a broken leg and ribs to bleeding on the brain.

Derek D. Schindler's sentence in Dakota County District Court on Wednesday included 11 months' credit for time served. He pleaded guilty in February to malicious punishment of a child.

The girl was born March 31, 2011, and the abuse began almost immediately and lasted until June of that year, when a pediatrician took X-rays during a routine checkup and found her right leg broken.

At a hospital, doctors found nine broken ribs, two fractures of the right leg and bleeding on the brain, according to the charges. "The injuries were consistent with grabbing, twisting or jerking of the legs, and violent squeezing or shaking," the complaint read.

The baby was under Schindler's care while her mother was at work.

After a week in the hospital, the baby was placed in foster care.
