All 38 residents were evacuated and one person was reported hospitalized for observation after a fire broke out Sunday evening at an assisted-living facility in Northfield.

"Everything seems under control now. Everybody's out," Northfield police Sgt. Scott Johnson said at 9:30 p.m., two hours after the fire was reported.

Fire heavily damaged at least one resident room at Valleyview Assisted Living and Memory Care, 812 Linden St. N., home officials said.

The residents first were evacuated across the street to Emmaus Baptist Church. Red Cross workers then took at least 30 of the residents to a sister Valleyview facility in Owatonna, Minn., 34 miles away, said Owatonna Valleyview administrator Jean Purrier. Others were staying with nearby relatives.

The 90-bed Owatonna home opened 45 new beds in October and had room for the evacuees, she said.

Purrier said one person was sent to the emergency room and added that smoke and water apparently damaged at least some of the Northfield facility and left it "unsafe for residents to return, at least for tonight. We hope they'll be able to go home soon."

Ambulances and a bus that could carry wheelchair patients had been dispatched from several metro area institutions in case they were needed.

Johnson said authorities will have more information about the fire at a Monday morning news briefing. He said he went through Valleyview on Sunday night but could not say what caused the fire or describe the extent of the damage.
