An administrator in the Lakeville School District has been named the new principal of Burnsville's Sioux Trail Elementary School.

Taber Akin, who is the assessment and accountability coordinator for the Lakeville School District, will start his new job on Feb. 1. The current principal, DeeDee Currier, is retiring on Jan. 31.

The Burnsville-Eagan-Savage school board approved the hiring at its meeting Thursday. The district said the interview team was impressed with Akin's passion for education, warmth and analytical mind.

Akin began his career as a third-grade teacher in Richfield. He graduated from Northland College and got his administrative license and master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of St. Thomas. He also is the public information officer for the Lakeville Fire Department.
