Icy roads contributed to a rollover accident that killed a 25-year-old woman and shut down a west-metro freeway Saturday morning.

The driver, identified as Amanda J. Lynch of Eagan, was headed north on Interstate 494 when she lost control of her vehicle near Bass Lake Road in Maple Grove at about 7:17 a.m. The vehicle went into the median and rolled, said Lt. Eric Roeske, a State Patrol spokesman.

Lynch was thrown from the vehicle and landed in the southbound lanes but was still alive until she was hit by a car as she lay on the road, Roeske said. Two motorists had stopped at the crash site to try to help, but a third vehicle was unable to stop and hit the victim, who died at the scene, Roeske said.

The victim's 2-year-old daughter who was riding in the vehicle and strapped into a car seat was not hurt. She was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale as a precaution, Roeske said.

The highway was icy at the time of the crash, according to the troopers who were first on the scene. They closed southbound lanes of I-494 for about three hours while they reconstructed the crash and cleared out the wreckage. Traffic was diverted up the exit ramp and then back onto the freeway during the closure.

While the crash was the only fatality reported in the Twin Cities by Saturday night, the patrol responded to numerous spinouts and rollovers on metro highways. One trouble spot was on Interstate 35E near County Road 2 in White Bear Lake, where six vehicles were involved in three incidents.

Even though it had stopped snowing by the time many of those accidents occurred, "people need to recognize that there are still slick spots in some areas," Roeske said. "This morning demonstrates that people need to be aware of the driving conditions."
