A junior varsity girls hockey coach at a Twin Cities private school has been charged with criminal sexual conduct stemming from a Nov. 28 incident with a teenager at his Burnsville home.

According to charges, the teenager told police that James B. Vandusartz, 56, digitally penetrated the student while the student was at the coach's home in the 13000 block of W. Preserve Boulevard, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dakota County District Court.

The Blake School said in a statement that Vandusartz serves as junior varsity coach, but the student involved, who is 16 or 17 years old, was not a student at the school. Blake was notified of Vandusartz's arrest Dec. 2, and he was suspended as coach immediately, pending further investigation.

"We have delivered instructions to him that he is not to have any contact with Blake students or families," the statement said.

After the teenager's complaint, Burnsville police arranged for a phone call between the coach and student last Wednesday. During that conversation, the charges state, Vandusartz "stated he felt there was a spark between them, and while they didn't have to be lovers, he thought the student enjoyed getting pleasure from him and he enjoyed giving it."

After his arrest, the coach told police that he had engaged in sexual contact with the student, the charges state. Although he was uncertain whether he had digitally penetrated the student, Vandusartz "did not deny it was possible in 'the heat of the moment,'" the charges state.

Vandusartz was charged on Dec. 3, the complaint said.

Blake School officials said they immediately notified by e-mail and letter families of the girls who were on the varsity or junior varsity teams during the years Vandusartz was employed at Blake. School officials also met with current team members and provided counseling and support, the statement said.

Telephone messages left at Vandusartz's home were not returned.

In separate statements released Tuesday, Burnsville police and Blake School administrators urged anyone who may have additional information about the coach to come forward.

Police asked that anyone with additional information get in touch with investigator Christi Carpenter at 952-895-4592.
