A school bus carrying 19 children was rear-ended by a car in Apple Valley on Monday, killing the car's driver, police said.

The crash occurred shortly before 3:20 p.m. on McAndrews Road. The westbound bus had stopped to turn left onto Dover Drive when a Ford Contour slammed into its right-rear corner, police said.

The car's female driver was killed instantly, police said. Authorities were not releasing her name until relatives could be notified. No one else was in the car.

Students who ride that bus attend Scott Highlands Middle School in Apple Valley, St. Joseph School in Rosemount and Faithful Shepherd Catholic School in Eagan, said Tony Taschner, a spokesman for the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district. No injuries were reported on the bus, he said.

Police do not believe the bus driver did anything wrong, Apple Valley police Sgt. Nick Francis said Monday. "It appears that he was stopped legally, with his turn signal on," he said.

The school district sent another bus to pick up the students, Taschner said. Students were given letters to inform their parents of the crash, he said.
