This past week, the Minneapolis Mayhem hosted the 2010 Bingham Cup at the National Sports Center in Blaine. The gay world rugby championship drew teams from Dublin, Ireland; Sydney, Australia; England, Scandinavia and across the United States. Jake Sutherland, front left, lined up against Ireland's Emerald Warriors, while Mayhem teammate Jean-Michel Michno, rear, held the ball. Most of the team's members are gay, but some are straight, including Brandon Connett, top, who had a bloody nose rinsed during the team's earlier loss to the San Francisco Fog. The Mayhem beat the Irish 7-3, but the Gotham Knights from New York City won the tournament. The event is named after Mark Bingham, who helped disrupt hijackers aboard United Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. On rugby and gay athletes, Bingham said: "We have the chance to be role models for other gay folks who wanted to play sports but never felt good enough or strong enough."
