Coon Rapids bank robber's 'mistake' costs him years in prison

Last update: October 30, 2009 - 9:09 PM

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced in federal court to more than four years in prison for making "a mistake": holding up at gunpoint a Coon Rapids bank last spring and then fleeing from police.

Along with 51 months in prison, Neiman R. Adams of Coon Rapids was sentenced Wednesday to make restitution of $7,738, which is the amount stolen from Klein Bank at 3070 Coon Rapids Blvd. He pleaded guilty in August.

According to the FBI and court records:

Adams entered the bank at about 9 a.m. April 22, pulled a handgun and ordered the teller to fill a garbage bag he was holding with cash. The teller complied, and Adams fled.

Police spotted Adams in a car and pulled him over. He jumped out and ran. Police quickly nabbed him, found more than $6,700 on him plus a semiautomatic handgun next to a garbage can about 20 yards from where he was arrested.

Upon his apprehension, Adams told police, "I made a mistake." He also confessed to the crime in an interview the next day with authorities.
