Maplewood woman faces more charges of identity theft

Last update: October 30, 2009 - 12:01 AM

A 41-year-old Maplewood woman jailed on charges of stealing credit cards and checks from teachers' purses in Washington County now faces allegations in Ramsey County that she carried out similar crimes at schools and churches.

Dawn Marie Scott was charged Thursday with identity theft, namely using credit cards and checks stolen from churches and schools in September and October. Scott, who also goes by the last name Rassett, is in jail in Stillwater and will appear in Washington County District Court today on the initial counts.

According to the Ramsey County criminal complaint: A Roseville police investigation determined that Scott stole credit cards and checkbooks from at least five people in Roseville and Maplewood since August. She allegedly used the stolen credit cards and checks to buy thousands of dollars in goods at stores and to cash stolen checks.

Scott is suspected of taking the purses of two women Oct. 10 at a wedding at North Heights Lutheran Church in Roseville. Ten days later, Scott allegedly struck Grace Lutheran Church, also in Roseville, swiping two purses from the ushers' closet. Police say Scott also took wallets and checkbooks from Concordia High School in Roseville and Weaver Lake Elementary School in Maplewood.

Bogus transactions outlined by Ramsey County authorities include passing a $1,000 check and charging $401.72 in goods at Kohl's in Roseville.

In Washington County, Scott is suspected of entering schools in Lake Elmo and Mahtomedi and ransacking teachers' purses for credit cards and checkbooks.
