A Brooklyn Center woman was charged Thursday with shooting a man in the chest following an argument outside an apartment complex Monday morning.

Simoreaa Mercedes Garrett, 22, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with first and second-degree assault for allegedly shooting the man during a confrontation that began with a fight between Garrett and the victim's girlfriend.

According to charges:

Police were called at 11:10 a.m. to the complex at 6037 Brooklyn Blvd., where they found the man, identified in court papers as CDB, lying on the floor of an apartment with a gunshot wound in the left side of his chest.

The victim told police that he came to the aid of his girlfriend that morning after looking out his apartment window and seeing her and Garrett fighting.

Later, Garrett and two men went to the victim's apartment, and one of the men said, "You fittin' to jump my girlfriend? ... Were you jumping my baby's momma?"

As the men fought, Garrett cocked a gun she was holding and asked one of the men, "Should I shoot him?"

The victim said he heard a man say, "No! Don't shoot him! We just gonna jump him! No, no, baby! We gonna jump him!" The victim then heard a gunshot and lay down as if he were dead.

Doctors reported that the bullet passed through CDB's lung and small intestine before lodging in his torso. He was in stable condition and was expected to survive, police said.

Garrett turned herself in on Tuesday and was being held in the county jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

A 19-year-old woman who had been with Garrett was arrested Tuesday and later released so prosecutors could have additional time to consider charges, said Cmdr. Mike Reynolds of the Brooklyn Center Police Department.

Reynolds added that police have not yet identified the two men involved in the scuffle.
