Last update: June 24, 2009 - 9:19 PM

A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday night after rescuers pulled him from 8 feet of water in a New Brighton lake.

Ramsey County Water Patrol and New Brighton police were called around 2:30 p.m. about a possible drowning near a Long Lake beach.

Lifeguards found the boy within minutes and pulled him to shore. The child, whom authorities have not identified, was in critical condition late Wednesday at Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare Hospital in St. Paul.

The boy was at the beach with a group from a local elementary school.

The Long Lake beach was closed for the rest of the day as authorities investigated.
