Man barricaded inside Brooklyn Center apartment surrenders

Last update: June 18, 2009 - 4:00 PM

A man who barricaded himself inside a Brooklyn Center apartment for six hours Tuesday has surrendered safely, police say.

The man, who is in his 40s, left the apartment and gave himself up to police shortly before 5 p.m., said Cmdr. Mike Reynolds of the Brooklyn Center Police Department.

Reynolds said Hennepin County Sheriff's deputies arrived to the man's apartment at Twin Lakes Manor, 3311 53rd Ave. N., at 11 a.m. to pick him up on a judge's order for a health and welfare hold. The man in his 40s, whose name has not been released, may be mentally ill, Reynolds said. He was in the apartment alone.

Other residents of the apartment building and in nearby units were evacuated. Reynolds said earlier that the man may have had a weapon, but that remains unclear. The man will be taken into protective custody. Charges are not immediately anticipated, Reynolds said.
