An early morning confrontation Sunday in Brooklyn Center resulted in a man being arrested after neighbors were ordered to their basements, according to officials.

Officers responded to a "despondent male having mental health issues" on the 5200 block of France Avenue North. Officers also believed the man was armed with a rifle, according to a statement from police.

Police Sgt. Steve Pastor said the officers attempted to make contact with the man, but all attempts were unsuccessful.

Officers then approached the residence and took the man into custody without incident. He was sent to an area hospital for evaluation, according to the statement.

Pastor said in these type of situations, dispatchers typically ask neighboring residents to stay in the lower level of their homes "just in case something happens."

Officers were on the scene for about 5 hours. Brooklyn Center's SWAT team and the Hennepin County Sheriff's office were also on the scene.
