Film on 1939 tornado will be shown Nov. 19

"Anoka and the Tornado of '39," a documentary by North Metro TV, will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Anoka County History Center, 2135 3rd Av., Anoka.

The film recounts the day that summer when a tornado moved north through Anoka and through the communities of Grow and Cedar before dissipating. The storm killed nine men and women.

Eric Houston, the filmmaker, will answer questions after the screening.

County opens new passport center

Another passport center has opened in Anoka County, in Coon Rapids. It's located adjacent to the Coon Rapids License Center at 455 99th Av. NW. and is the county's second location. The other center is in Blaine at its license center at 10995 Club West Pkwy.

New federal rules require passport processing offices to be physically separated from driver's license and birth certificate processing centers.

The Coon Rapids passport center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is closed Saturdays and Sundays.

Human rights chief to speak on Nov. 18

Kevin Lindsey, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, will speak on Tuesday at the Brooklyn Park City Council chambers. Lindsey will discuss a number of topics, such as changes in laws and new laws that have been passed aimed at reducing discrimination; recent instances of discrimination in employment and education that have occurred because of the Ebola crisis; updates in the legal requirement for diversity and inclusion in state hiring. There will also be a question-and-answer session.

Lindsey will speak at 6:30 p.m. A pizza buffet and social period starting at 6 p.m. will precede his presentation. 'Get Up & Geo' event scheduled for Nov. 19

Wednesday, Nov. 19, is GIS Day, and Brooklyn Park will hold an event that day called "Get Up & Geo."

GIS stands for "geographic information system," and the city describes it as a "tool that allows you to capture, analyze and present information on a map." It lets you see information such as property value, amenities, light rail transit and demographics, the city adds.

The event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Community Activity Center and include presentations on mapping and how GIS is being used in Brooklyn Park.

COON RAPIDS

Salvation Army seeks to build rehab center

Salvation Army officials want to build a multiuse facility that would include an adult rehabilitation center on 5 acres of vacant land in Coon Rapids. Officials recently spoke to the City Council about their plan, but no formal application has been made.

The proposal includes a 60,000 square-foot processing facility for donated items, 20,000 square feet of office space, a 7,000-square foot chapel, and 20,000 square-feet for residential use.

The residential space would be for men recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. There's an adult rehabilitation center currently located near downtown Minneapolis. If the project moves forward, as many as 80 staff members from the Minneapolis location could move to the Coon Rapids site.

FRIDLEY

Christmas exhibit at History Center

"Christmas in the 1960s," the Fridley Historical Society's third annual holiday exhibit, is on display at the Fridley History Center, 611 Mississippi St. NE. The display includes room vignettes and artifacts from that decade, including a college dorm room, kids' games, a model railroad, and more. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 8-Dec. 20, and 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Nov. 11-Dec. 16. Admission is free.

Taking a closer look at the Constitution

The League of Women Voters-Golden Valley, the Hennepin County Library's Golden Valley branch and the Golden Valley Human Rights Commission are sponsoring their third community conversation about the U.S. Constitution. This one will focus on the 14th Amendment and the quest for equality. It will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Brookview Community Center in Golden Valley, 200 Brookview Parkway.

The meeting will start with the showing of a video on the PBS series "Constitution USA" with Peter Sagal.

Small-group discussions will be held. The purpose is to provide the opportunity to respectfully share diverse opinions, listen to others' perspectives and see if there is some common ground. All residents of Hennepin County are invited.

Event will look at caregiving for people with depression

Jeff Berryhill, Ph.D., a psychologist from Arden Woods Psychological Services, will present a discussion on caregiving for people suffering from depression at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Living Waters Church in Lino Lakes.

Berryhill will discuss the different kinds and degrees of depression, what times of year it is most prevalent, and when is time to call for professional care. Questions from those attending will be addressed.

This presentation is open to all, and there is no cost to attend.

Bone health session set for tonight

Bone health will be the subject of an Education and Enrichment workshop for people ages 55 and over Wednesday at the New Brighton Community Center.

The session will run from 6 to 8 p.m. It is presented by New Brighton Parks and Recreation in partnership with HealthPartners/Regions Hospital.

Saturday classes will teach CPR skills

Separate classes focusing on adult CPR and pediatric CPR skills will be offered by the city of New Hope on Saturday. They'll be held at City Hall, 4401 Xylon Av. N.

An Adult CPR/AED class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon. It will teach skills needed to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies for victims ages 12 and older. A Pediatric CPR/AED class is set for 1 to 4:30 p.m. It will cover skills needed to help pediatric victims from infants to age 12.

Each class will be led by a Red Cross-certified instructor. Participants will also learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) device.

Students must be at least 16 years old. Everyone who completes one of the courses will receive a certificate valid for two years.

Course will refresh defensive driving skills

The New Hope Parks and Recreation Department is offering a four-hour "Defensive Driving Refresher" class from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday. It is for drivers age 55 and older who have already taken the eight-hour defensive driving course.

The course enables older adults to renew their National Safety Council certification for a 10 percent discount on car insurance. Recertification is required every three years.

The course, co-sponsored by the Police Department, will be held at New Hope City Hall, 4401 Xylon Ave. N. Preregistration is required.

Breaking Free discusses programs

Breaking Free, a Minnesota-based organization that helps women and girls escape sexual exploitation, will hold a presentation for the public on Wednesday, Nov. 19. The program, "Stop Human Trafficking: Minnesota Girls Are Not For Sale," will take place starting at 6:30 p.m. at New Hope City Hall, 4401 Xylon Av. N. The event, which is being presented by the League of Women Voters of Crystal, New Hope and East Plymouth, will discuss how to be involved in the prevention and intervention of sex trafficking. The FBI says the Twin Cities is one of the nation's 13 largest centers for sex trafficking of children.

Prostate cancer group will meet Thursday

The University of Minnesota prostate cancer support group will meet from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hope Lodge, 2500 University Av. SE, Minneapolis. Coping with the treatment side effects of urinary incontinence/erectile dysfunction will be discussed with Dr. Sean Elliott, a University of Minnesota urologist.
