Open house on 169/101st Av. study

A study looking into a possible interchange between Highway 169 and 101st Avenue will be the subject of an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Brooklyn Park City Hall, 5200 85th Av. N.

This is the third open house on the subject, and it will give people a chance to be updated and to offer input on three alternatives that are under consideration.

Brooklyn Park's partners on the study are Maple Grove, Osseo and Champlin; the Minnesota Department of Transportation; the Metropolitan Council; Hennepin County; Metro Transit, and the Three Rivers Park District.

Food shelf benefits from block grant

The Washington County Board recently approved using $70,000 from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to fund the Hugo Good Neighbor Food Shelf.

Annual grant funds for CDBG and HOME programs are used to fund high- and medium-priority activities identified in the Consolidated Plan approved by the board and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Hugo Good Neighbor Food Shelf was approved for funding in the 2014 Annual Action Plan.

The food shelf is south of 152nd Street and east of Hwy. 61 in Hugo. Eighty-seven percent of the households served by this food shelf are low- to moderate-income households.

For the past three years the food shelf has served: 1,381 families in 2011; 1,761 families in 2012; and 2,021 families in 2013.

Golf leagues offered at Village course

Several golf leagues for adults will begin play the week of Aug. 25 at the New Hope Village Golf Course. Being offered are:

• A league for seniors on Monday mornings.

• A men's league on Monday evenings;

• Women's leagues on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Wednesday and Thursday evenings;

• A couple's league on Friday evenings.

Play continues through the week of Oct. 15. There's an entry fee of $10 per participant plus weekly green fees. Golfers can register by phone with a major credit card by calling 763-531-5178 or at the golf course, at 8130 Bass Lake Road.

Soccer, basketball programs on tap

New Hope Parks and Recreation will offer a soccer program for kids ages 5 through 8 on Tuesdays from Sept. 16 through Oct. 21 at Hidden Valley Park, 32nd and Boone avenues. Instructors from Revolutionary Sports will conduct the classes. A MiniStars program, scheduled for 6-6:45 p.m., will teach basic skills to kids age 5-7, and MightyStars, running from 6:45-7:30 p.m., will help kids ages 6 to 8 begin to expand on their skills. A basketball program for kids ages 6-12 also will be offered on Tuesday evenings from Sept. 16 to Oct. 21. It will be held at the New Hope Community Gym, 8230 47th Av. N., on the north end of Cooper High School. MightyStars basketball, running from 6:30-7:15 p.m., will teach players age 6-8 basic skills, and SkillStars, from 7:15 to 8 p.m., will help kids age 9-12 enhance their individual skills. 2 events will help bring back the prairie

Interested in helping restore the native prairie?

Join other volunteers from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove or during the same time period Saturday, Sept. 6, at Crow-Hassan Park Reserve in Rogers. Volunteers will help park staffers collect hundreds of pounds of wildflower seed for prairie restoration and enhancement projects. Training and collection bags will be provided.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old or be accompanied by an adult. Groups are welcome, but each group must have at least one adult per eight youths. This program is for ages 12 and over. A permission form is needed for participation by minors. To register, call 763-559-6706.

'Summer in the City' meeting on Aug. 26

The city will host its final "Summer in the City" meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Riverwind Park, 11747 Crocus St.

Residents can meet council member and talk with city staff about projects in the neighborhood and the city.
