With more than 80 percent of district schoolchildren qualifying for free and reduced-price lunches, Columbia Heights teachers, police officers and firefighters see acute need on the job every day. The recent harsh winter further exposed it.

"There were too many kids who went without hats last winter or went without suitable coats," said Police Chief Scott Nadeau.

In response, the Columbia Heights police and fire departments and community partners are holding a "fun raiser" on Wednesday, April 30, to help out local children in need. The Clean, Fed and Warm event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Columbia Heights Public Safety Center, 825 41st Av. NE.

Proceeds will be used to buy clothes, personal care hygiene items, canned and nonperishable foods.

The event includes live music, police and fire department demonstrations, a silent auction and a casual dinner of hot dogs, chips and soda or water. Police dogs and their trainer will demonstrate their skills and police officers will showcase their shooting simulator. The Anoka County Sheriff's SWAT team will make an appearance and the Fire Department will put out a demonstration fire. Several police vehicles and fire trucks will be on display.

Financial contributions of $10 per person or $20 per family will be accepted at the event or at www.paypal.com or www.razoo.com.

Donated items can be dropped off at SACA Food Shelf, 627 38th Av. NE. in Columbia Heights, or at the Public Safety Center.
