Saturday will be recycling drop-off day

Anoka will hold a spring recycling drop-off day on Saturday morning at its Public Works Building, 501 Pierce St.

Anoka County residents and small businesses can drop off items from 8 a.m. until noon.

Businesses with up to 50 employees can bring up to a pickup truckload of accepted recyclable materials. Vehicle batteries, freezers and refrigerators are free, but minimal fees are charged for items such as tires and fluorescent light bulbs.

The event is funded by Anoka County and a state grant from the Select Committee on Recycling and the Environment.

For more information, go to the city’s website at www.ci.anoka.mn.us. (Please note: Last week’s Town Square included this item under a city heading of Fridley, although it correctly stated that the event is in Anoka.)

‘Ghosts of Anoka’ tours returning in May

Another season of “Ghosts of Anoka” walking tours will begin next month.

The tours, presented by the Anoka County Historical Society, are offered on the first and third Thursdays of the month and weave “history, conjecture and fact, sprinkled with a flair for the dramatic and seasoned by good storytelling,” as the society puts it.

The first tours this year will be Thursday, May 9 and 23, and Saturday, May 11 and 25. They start at 7:30 p.m., cover about 15 blocks and last about an hour and a half. Tickets are $7 for adults ($5 for Historical Society members) and $5 for children. Tours are limited to 24 people, and advance reservations are required, either at the Anoka History Center, 2135 Third Av. N, or by calling 763-421-0600.
