Pet vaccinations available on Saturday

The Community Service Department of the Anoka Police Department will hold a pet vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the city's Animal Containment Center next to Green Haven Golf Course.

The prices are $11 for dog or cat rabies vaccination, $18 for canine DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and Parvo), $13 for feline PRC (distemper, rhinotrachetis and calicvirus), $21 for feline leukemia vaccine, and $23 for Lyme vaccine.

Dogs and cats must be at least three months old and must be on a leash or in a pet container. No sick or injured pets will be vaccinated.

City pet licenses also will be available.

Rotary Club hosts 2013 fundraiser

The Golden Valley Rotary Club's 2013 FUNdraiser will take place at 6 p.m. May 3 at the Golden Valley Golf and Country Club. The evening will help raise money for scholarships to local students and teachers in Robbinsdale and Hopkins.

The "Songs for Scholarships" event, which will take place at the country club at 7001 Golden Valley Road in Golden Valley, will include a live auction, raffle and entertainment by the Optimum Trajectory Jazz Quintet.

Money raised at past events has benefited students and teachers at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School, but this year the rotary club is expanding the scholarship program to include Hopkins High School because the school district also overlaps with half of the city.

Bridge Builders spring event is April 20

Golden Valley citizens and organizations that serve the community are encouraged to participate in the spring Bridge Builders event set for Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m.-noon at the Minnesota Department of Transportation, 2055 N. Lilac Drive.

Bridge Builders is a citizen-led volunteer organization of local individuals, members of community organizations and businesspeople who want to connect with others to improve the Golden Valley with new ideas, partnerships and small projects and activities.

At this meeting, topics include a discussion on the purpose, power and organizational structure of Bridge Builders. There will also be an appeal to community members to serve as ambassadors and volunteers for the May 18 Golden Valley Days Art and Music Festival. The event will conclude with a tour of the Minnesota Department of Transportation facility.

Earthiest features exhibits, activities

Celebrate Earth Day at Brooklyn Center EarthFest starting at noon on April 20.

Weekend ice show will be 'Paradise'

Three Rivers Figure Skating Club and the Brooklyn Park and Champlin skating schools will present their annual skating show on Friday and Saturday at the Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center, 5600 85th Av. N.

The recital, "Skating in Paradise … Spring Break," will feature more than 80 area skaters.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday. Presale tickets, available at the Community Activity Center, are $7 for adults ages 18 through 59; $4 for adults age 60 and over; and $4 for students ages 5-17. At the door, they'll be $1 more.

Late April ice show will feature medalist

"Movies and Popcorn" is the theme of the 24th annual Ice Fantasy Show, set for April 26-28 at the Coon Rapids Ice Center. The show will include skaters from Coon Rapids and surrounding cities. Performances will be given at 7 p.m. April 26; 6:30 p.m. April 27, and 2 p.m. April 28. The Saturday and Sunday shows will feature Agnes Zawadzki, who won the bronze medal at this year's U.S. national competition.

Crews to rebuild miles of roadway, sidewalks

Road crews will reconstruct nearly 11 miles of streets in Coon Rapids this year.

Crews will remove and replace pavement including sections of roadways, damaged curb, driveway aprons and sidewalks. They will also repair or replace storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water main facilities.

Columbia Heights

City seeks talent for Idol competition

Columbia Heights is looking for singing talent for its Seventh Annual Heights Idol competitions.

The contest is open to children and adults and costs $10 a person.

The first round will be held at 7 p.m. on May 16 at Murzyn Hall. Judges during the first round have musical training and coach contestants on ways to improve their performances.

The second round will be on an outdoor stage on June 29 during the Heights Jamboree City Celebration.

Prospective contestants are required to audition by appointment. They should come ready with their music.

Fire department holds citizens academy

The East Bethel Fire Department will host a citizen's Fire Academy that will reveal the inner workings of the department.

The two-part seminar runs from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on April 11 and 18 at the firehouse, 2751 Viking Blvd. NE.

Participants will learn about the fire station and fire equipment, how 911 dispatch handles emergency calls, and what it takes to be a firefighter.

Pet clinic is set for April 20

Oak Grove will offer a pet clinic from 9 a.m. to noon April 20 at the city fire station, 19900 Nightingale St. NW.

Shots for rabies ($15), dog or cat distemper ($15-20), feline leukemia ($20) and Lyme disease ($25) will be available, along with heartworm tests ($20) and combo Lyme/heart worm tests ($48).

Heartworm preventive and flea/tick medicines will also be sold.
