Man who hit parked car in Oak Grove charged with homicide

Last update: June 17, 2008 - 5:17 PM

The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a parked car and killed one of his passengers Saturday in Oak Grove has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, the Anoka County Attorney's Office said.

According to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday, Christopher Kelly Anderson, 25, was driving his BMW around 2:10 a.m. when he hit a vehicle parked on the 22800 block of Zion Pkwy., then ran from the scene.

When officers arrived they found a passenger dead in the back seat. He was identified as Jeffrey Hettwer, a decorated artist from Ham Lake. Two other passengers were injured, the complaint said.

Police spotted Anderson about two hours later on the side of road apparently flagging down vehicles for a ride. An officer stopped and Anderson told him that he had been in an accident and "was not thinking and ran from the scene." He also told the officer that he had been drinking all night at a bowling alley where he had been with some friends, the complaint said.

In a subsequent statement, Anderson told officers that he had been a passenger in the BMW.

A party not involved in the crash reported to Anoka County authorities that he received a message in his cell phone voice mail box. In the recorded call, the man believed to be Anderson is heard attempting to con one of the passengers to drive his car.
