ANOKA

May 5: The makeover of the Rum River in Anoka is on track after the City Council approved a plan to restore the channel from the pedestrian bridge to the Main Street bridge. The channel will be about 40 feet wide and 4 feet deep and will be able to accommodate boat traffic south of the dam.

The project is expected to cost $200,000, which will come from the city's Park Capital Improvement Fund. After the city selects a contractor this summer, work will begin in November and is expected to be completed in February.

NEW HOPE

May 12: The City Council was expected to appoint John Elder to its vacant council member position. Elder was one of 10 applicants who sought the opening after Steve Sommer resigned in April. A former New Hope police officer from 1999 until 2006, Elder currently works in sales for Minnesota Wisconsin Playground. The 20-year New Hope resident wrote in his application that among the most important issues facing the community are bringing business to the city, managing the housing stock and running the city with ever-decreasing local government aid payments.

Elder will serve until Nov. 4, when the remaining two years on Sommer's term will be up for reelection. In his application, Elder said he plans to seek election for a full term.

SHOREVIEW

May 5: A plan for a senior living facility is moving forward after the City Council expressed support for the project and requested more information. Southview Senior Living would include 104 apartments that would offer assisted living, a memory care facility and independent living. The site, which is on Hodgson Road just north of Hwy. 96, was previously expected to house a 68-unit condominium project. Before the City Council gives final approval, the members requested more information about the project's landscaping and the market for senior housing.
