Anoka-Ramsey students built a Chinese garden as a monument to a sister school in China.
Dozens of students from Anoka-Ramsey Community College spent Thursday and Friday digging and rolling rocks into place to build a Chinese garden in honor of sister college Zhaoqing University in Guangdong Province, China. The college's chapter of honor society Phi Theta Kappa led the effort to create the garden of peonies, azaleas, magnolia bushes, rhododendrons and other greenery.
The Windego Park Society donated the land, next to Anoka's amphitheater. The garden has "the bones, not the body yet," one of the organizers, Sarah Swenson, said, and the students are accepting donations to add to their work.
Donated plants came from north-metro garden centers, including Anoka Ramsey Farm and Garden Center, Plants and Things USA, and Devon's Gardens, all in Anoka; Mickman Brothers in Ham Lake; Harmony nursery in Blaine, and Hedberg Landscape in Andover.
