A Fridley mother was sentenced to three months in jail Wednesday for forcing her 12-year-old daughter to run outside in a diaper, her head freshly shaven, as punishment for a failing grade. During the hearing, Anoka County District Judge Barry Sullivan said the May incident was an "assault on her dignity." The girl's mother was immediately taken to jail.

After completing her sentence, the woman will be on supervised probation for two years. She must comply with a court-ordered child plan because the girl was removed from her home after the incident. The court will determine how much contact the mother can have with her daughter.

Sullivan also ordered that the mother's boyfriend have no contact with the girl. The 34-year-old man pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor aiding and abetting malicious punishment and to a misdemeanor domestic assault case from 2010 for repeatedly hitting his stepdaughter in the legs with a belt. He will be sentenced next week.

The girl's 38-year-old mother pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor malicious punishment of a child for the May incident. According to the criminal complaint and other court documents, on May 7, the girl said her mother ordered her to wear the diaper for getting an "F" on her report card. She said this was the third time she'd been put on " diaper duty."
