Brooklyn Park will become Minnesota's newest Beyond the Yellow Ribbon city on Sunday, capping a yearlong effort to earn that status from the military support organization. The campaign grew out of the city's Community Engagement Initiative, a broad effort to reach out to residents and involve them in civic activities.

Since detailing its plan to become a Yellow Ribbon city, Brooklyn Park has shown support for military members and their families, said Amy Hanson, chairwoman of the campaign's steering committee. Services cover a wide range, including home safety checks for families and scholarships for children of deployed military members.

The network also is working to identify crises that affect service members, veterans and their families and the support the community can provide.

Today's ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the Brooklyn Park community center.

There are now more than 60 Beyond the Yellow Ribbon communities in the state. For further information, visit www.btyr.org.
