The Anoka-Hennepin school board selected Jeff Simon on Monday night to fill a vacancy that had existed since one of its six members resigned in March.
Simon, who ran for the school board in 2008 and 2010, will complete the term of former member Kathy Tingelstad, who resigned after the board approved the settlement of a federal investigation and a lawsuit over the district's handling of bullying of students based on sexual orientation. Tingelstad, who cast the lone vote against approval, said the settlement set a dangerous precedent of federal involvement in local schools and expressed concern about the cost.
The school board received seven applications for the seat and interviewed four candidates for the term that runs until Jan. 1, 2014.
Simon, of Coon Rapids, has two children in the district and is a former school counselor who now is vice president of marketing for a local business, said school board Chair Tom Heidemann.
