A woman is dead, allegedly at the hands of a man with whom she had a relationship, Brooklyn Park police said Saturday after they arrived at a house to find her body and a fire inside.

Police have not yet released the names of the victim or the suspect, who was arrested at a separate location a short time after the woman's body was discovered inside the split-level house in the 6200 block of 70th Avenue N., less than a mile north of Interstates 94/694.

Inspector Todd Milburn would not say how the woman died or describe her relationship with the man. Children were in the home at the time, he said, but they were not harmed. The suspect was being held at the Brooklyn Park Police Department detention facility pending charges. Milburn said police aren't looking for other suspects.

Police found the woman's body when they responded to a request to check the welfare of someone inside the home at 5:11 a.m. Saturday. They found smoke and called Brooklyn Park firefighters, who put out the fire and discovered the body.

Records show a 34-year-old woman who owns the house lives there with her husband, age 54.

Investigators remained there well into Saturday afternoon, as yellow crime scene tape cordoned off the block where it intersects with Colorado Avenue N. A Hennepin County crime lab vehicle sat outside the house as officers ran in and out. The house did not appear to have sustained significant damage from the fire. Cleaning crews arrived at the house while investigators remained there.

Milburn said police have been called to the house in the past, but he could not say whether the victim or suspect were involved with the calls.

Police will present the case Tuesday to the Hennepin County attorney for possible charges. The Hennepin County medical examiner will release the victim's name, Milburn said.

Brooklyn Park police and fire, the state fire marshal, and the Hennepin County crime lab and medical examiner are still investigating.
