A Minneapolis man was charged on Monday with raping a female patient he was visiting at a Golden Valley group home.

The woman, who has Alzheimer's disease and dementia, is considered a vulnerable adult who is severely cognitively impaired, according to the criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.

Alfonso Martinez, 52, faces a felony count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. He is in the Hennepin County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be in court Tuesday, according to jail records.

Police were called to the house, on the 1300 block of Oak Grove Circle, about 9 p.m. on Sept. 16. Earlier that night, the woman was visited by a friend, a man she knew only as Alfonso, whom she met at another facility, according to the complaint.

The two were talking and sitting on a couch when he began touching her. The woman felt uncomfortable and went to her room, but Martinez followed. At one point, a staff member saw them on the woman's bed and called the supervisor for help, the complaint said.

Police interviewed Martinez in November, when he said he knew the woman, denied having any sexual contact and volunteered a sample from his cheek for DNA analysis, according to the complaint. When he was arrested three days later, Martinez told police he did have sex with the woman.
