Augsburg College students in Minneapolis are being put on alert for any symptoms of meningitis after a first-year student was hospitalized Wednesday night with a confirmed case of bacterial meningitis.
The female student's close personal contacts, including her roommate, others in her dormitory and her instructors, were notified and advised about antibiotics to combat the disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bacterial meningitis is a serious illness, but it's not as contagious as a cold or the flu. The bacteria is spread by direct saliva contact, such as kissing or sharing of food, drinks or toothbrushes.
Augsburg students were told to seek treatment if they have symptoms that include a stiff neck, headache or high fever.
