An early morning domestic assault spawned a police pursuit that ended with a car ramming deep into a Minneapolis apartment building Tuesday, leaving two residents slightly hurt and a suspect jailed on suspicion of drunken driving and other serious offenses.

Mohamed K. Yusuf, 24, of St. Paul, was arrested once his car ended up with "just a little bit of the trunk sticking out" from the apartment building in the 2800 block of Bloomington Avenue S., said police spokesman John Elder.

Yusuf and a woman in the car with him were taken to a hospital for noncritical injuries, Elder said. The two apartment residents were treated at the scene for "minor scratches," he said.

The state Department of Public Safety said Yusuf has not had a driver's license since it was revoked in May 2012.

According to Elder:

About 1:15 a.m., officers responded to the 2800 block of Bloomington Avenue concerning a "domestic assault in progress."

Yusuf, behind the wheel, spotted the officers and drove off. The brief chase ended when his car slammed into a building down the block.

Allegations against Yusuf include criminal vehicular injury, fleeing police, assault with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, fifth-degree domestic assault, damage to property, drunken driving, refusing drug or alcohol testing and giving false information to police. Charges are pending.

Yusuf's criminal history in Minnesota includes two convictions for drunken-driving, one coming after he lost his license, and another conviction for felony terroristic threats.
