Minneapolis Park and Recreation employees Dan Falk, left, and Tim Coffin prepared one of several new signs installed Friday around Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis with the lake's Dakota name, Bde Maka Ska.
The signs were updated, though the lake's name hasn't been changed, "to honor the Dakota people and educate the public," a news release from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation board said.
The new placards were installed at each of the lake's entrance signs, following a Sept. 2 Park Board action authorizing the signs on a 6-0 vote.
The board's legal counsel has advised that it has no authority to change the lake's name.
