Authorities on Wednesday freed a 38-year-old man who was arrested soon after the killing of a man in a south Minneapolis apartment a day earlier.

Police said they forwarded a case to the Hennepin County attorney's office for prosecution, but no charges have been filed.

In the meantime, the man, who lives about a half-mile from the apartment, was released from jail Wednesday afternoon and "the investigation continues," said attorney's office spokesman Chuck Laszewski.

The 50-year-old victim was killed around dawn Tuesday in a third-floor apartment in the 1800 block of 5th Avenue S.

"There were no obvious signs of a weapon being used," police spokesman John Elder said a few hours after the killing. "This may end up being a situation of blunt-force trauma."

The identity of the victim has yet to be released.
