Police continued their investigation Wednesday into the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy in north Minneapolis that authorities believe led to at least two more shootings that night.

Police would not say whether the Tuesday night death of Jemario Langston was gang-related, but relatives and neighbors say they believe the shooting was the latest act in a continuing conflict between two rival gangs.

An autopsy report on the teen found that he died of gunshot wounds. An unidentified younger boy was also shot but is expected to survive.

Police have released few details about the shooting, which happened about 3:40 p.m. in the 2300 block of Fremont Avenue N. But police said they believe that two other shootings in the area that night were related.

The next shooting took place about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday about a block from the earlier incident, in the area of Girard and 30th Avenues N., police spokesman John Elder said.

Elder said a 17-year-old boy, whose identity was not released, was shot in the head and taken to a hospital. His condition remains unknown.

Just before 9 p.m., gunfire broke out in the 2800 block of Dupont Avenue N., but no injuries were reported, Elder said.

Hours after the initial shooting, a woman sat weeping loudly on the curb near the crime scene, being comforted by several passers-by. The woman, who identified herself as Langston's aunt but did not want to give her name, said between sobs that she had opened her back door after hearing gunshots, only to find her nephew's crumpled body.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges offered condolences to Langston's family.

"Gun violence is not a theory. We see it too often in our city. Needing to end gun violence is not a theory," Hodges said in a statement. "MPD is diligently working to find those responsible for this death and intercept further retaliatory actions."
