A man walking in downtown Minneapolis was struck and killed Thursday by a Metro Transit bus, authorities said.

The man, 36, was in a crosswalk at 1st Street and Marquette Avenue when he was hit about 6:30 p.m. by a northbound bus turning onto westbound 1st, said transit spokesman John Siqveland.

The man was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. He died about 3 a.m. Friday. His name has not been released.

Transit police and safety personnel are investigating.

The driver, a 16-year veteran with an “exemplary work history” was placed on paid administrative leave, Siqveland said. The driver underwent drug and alcohol testing, which is standard, the spokesman added.

This was the 10th fatality involving a pedestrian and a Metro Transit bus in the past 23 years and the first since 2010.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with loved ones of the man who tragically lost his life last night,” Siqveland said.
