The woman who snatched an acquaintance’s baby boy from a south Minneapolis apartment and set off a four-hour hunt was sentenced Monday to three years in prison and is likely to be deported upon her release, according to the Hennepin County attorney’s office.

Isabel Diaz-Castillo, 30, of Minneapolis, who pleaded guilty last month to kidnapping 8-month-old Carlos Orozco in February, was given credit for the 181 days she has already served in jail.

Diaz-Castillo took the baby from his Minneapolis home in the 2100 block of Portland Avenue S., while his mother, Vicky Orozco, was showering.

Police found the baby in the basement of a home belonging to a relative of Castillo in the 3700 block of 3rd Avenue S. four hours later and arrested Diaz-Castillo. She balked at handing over Carlos to the officers, saying, “That’s my baby!”

Vicky Orozco told police she had met Diaz-Castillo about a month earlier at a laundry, where Diaz-Castillo paid an unusual amount of attention to Carlos.

Diaz-Castillo had been to the Orozcos’ south Minneapolis apartment several times and was supposed to come lend Vicky Orozco some money when she took the baby.

Diaz-Castillo confided in Orozco that she had suffered a miscarriage in the past few months, according to investigators.
