A sewer system issue releasing an "unpleasant odor" shut down a Hennepin County building Friday.

Employees at the Century Plaza building off 12th Street and 3rd Avenue S., which houses social services and other county services, reported the strong sewage odor early Friday. County crews are investigating the cause of the odor after CenterPoint Energy workers determined there is no gas leak, county spokeswoman Maria Baca said.

No other downtown buildings were affected, she said, and the building is scheduled to reopen on Monday.

County residents needing assistance Friday for social services such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food support) or health care coverage, were advised to instead go to the Northwest Family Service Center at 7051 Brooklyn Blvd., Brooklyn Center. Metro Transit's No. 5, 19 and 22 buses go from 7th Street and Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis to the Brooklyn Center Transit Center. From there, people can take the No. 723 bus to 70th Avenue N. and Brooklyn Boulevard. For more information, go to www.MetroTransit.org.
