The new-and-improved Cedar Avenue busway will begin service June 22, pending approval Wednesday from the Metropolitan Council.
The launch of the metro area's first bus-rapid transit (BRT) line has been delayed several times after construction of its five stations took more time than expected. The original plan was to start service in November 2012.
The busway, from Lakeville to Bloomington, is meant to mimic light rail, with sleek buses running in dedicated shoulder lanes with regular stops at roadside stations. The busway, dubbed the Red Line, will connect with Hiawatha Avenue light rail, soon to be known as the Blue Line. Central Corridor light rail — the Green Line — also will eventually be connected to the Blue Line.
Met Council spokeswoman Michelle Fure said the June 22 opening was a joint recommendation from Dakota County, the Met Council and the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority.
