Though thousands of miles away, Chinese students at the University of Minnesota had the earthquake-ravaged area of their home country on their minds.

On Thursday and Friday, the Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars raised money for relief efforts in the Sichuan Province of China. The official death toll in that area is currently 22,000.

Xue Bai, one of the roughly 750 students from China that attend the U's Twin Cities campus said many people stopped by the table, despite the fact that this is spring semester finals week.

"A construction worker donated $200; it was touching," she said.

On Friday night, a candlelight memorial service was scheduled for near the Mississippi River.

"We just want to show our empathy for what happened," Xue Bai said.
