A 41-year-old Minneapolis man was charged Wednesday with stabbing his roommate to death during a weekend birthday celebration.

Mauricio Antonio Orochera was charged with second-degree murder after police say he repeatedly stabbed Ever Gonzalez-Canales, 35. The death is Minneapolis' first homicide in 2013. Orochera is being held in Hennepin County jail.

According to the criminal complaint, the men and others were in the home on the 2900 block of Russell Avenue N., celebrating a birthday on Saturday and into Sunday morning when Orochera and Gonzalez-Canales began fighting in the living room.

After the homeowner broke up the fight, the two men shook hands and went into separate areas of the home.

But, witnesses said, Orochera later pushed his way into Gonzalez-Canales' bedroom and attacked him with a knife. Gonzalez-Canales was dead when paramedics arrived.
