A Minneapolis park police officer was stabbed late Tuesday while confronting a robbery suspect, who was shot and injured by another park police officer, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 11:40 p.m., near 53rd Street, Bryant Avenue S. and Minnehaha Parkway.

Minneapolis police and park police gave this account of what happened:

The park police officers -- a man and a woman -- were responding to a call about a robbery at knifepoint in the area on the north side of Minnehaha Creek about 15 minutes earlier.

The officers were on the south side of the creek near a pedestrian bridge when they confronted a man. They had a slight altercation, authorities said, and the man pulled out a knife and stabbed the female officer in the shoulder. She also had a head injury from the altercation, authorities said.

The male officer then shot the suspect at least once, and the officers called for help. Witnesses in the area reported hearing two or three shots and seeing at least 20 police cars respond.

The suspect was taken to a hospital by ambulance, and the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Park Police Chief Linda Bergstrom said early Wednesday that her first concern was for the safety of the officers and that she was thankful they were not more seriously hurt.

Authorities continued to investigate early Wednesday, and Bergstrom asked the Minneapolis Police Department to take the lead in the investigation.
