Authorities on Sunday identified the man who died after crashing his car in downtown Minneapolis.

Marcus Tharpe, 30, of Maple Grove, died of multiple blunt-force injuries, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Police said he was driving at high speed just before 4:30 a.m. Friday while exiting Interstate 35W. His car jumped the curb, went through a fence and hit two trees in Triangle Park at 10th Street and 5th Avenue S.

Police said he was wearing his seat belt.

According to his Facebook page, Tharpe was a 2001 graduate of Chandler (Ariz.) High School and had studied at Arizona State University in Tempe.

"One of the funniest, warm hearted, talented, outgoing friends I've ever had," wrote friend Johnny Thomason on his Facebook page. "He was one of those guys that you couldn't say anything bad about, even if you tried."
