Six Hiawatha light-rail stations in Minneapolis will shut down this weekend for construction and maintenance work, officials announced Tuesday.
Metro Transit buses will ferry riders while stations from Target Field to Cedar-Riverside are out of commission from 6:30 p.m. Friday to 3:30 a.m. Monday. The 12-mile-long rail line will operate normally from Franklin Avenue to the Mall of America.
The closings cover the northern third of the line's stations: Target Field, Warehouse District/Hennepin Avenue, Nicollet Mall, Government Plaza, Downtown East/Metrodome and Cedar-Riverside.
The timing works well with the Minnesota Twins' schedule -- the team will be in Kansas City for three games with the Royals.
Filling in for light rail will be Route 55 buses. While the buses will run more frequently than trains, riders should note that bus trips will take longer.
Rider alerts will be posted at stations with details about the service adjustment.
Metro Transit employees will also be at key train stations to direct customers to buses.
