The board of Minneapolis' DeLaSalle High School on Friday named longtime principal Barry Lieske as president, succeeding Christian Brother Michael Collins, a 1955 graduate of the Nicollet Island school who died in January after 20 years as its leader.

Lieske, 55, who has been the chief of day-to-day operations at the century-old Catholic school on Nicollet Island since 1993, joined DeLaSalle in 1979 after graduation from Hamline University.

Lieske has served as interim president since the death of Collins at age 74.

DeLaSalle, the oldest Catholic high school in the area, educates a high percentage of low-income and minority students and graduates more than 90 percent of its senior class to colleges.
