A man suspected of fatally hitting a 61-year-old bicyclist Saturday morning and then leaving the scene turned himself in a little more than nine hours later, police said.

The bicyclist, whose identity had been not been released Saturday night, died in the afternoon at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Police were called just before 11 a.m. to the intersection of E. Franklin Avenue and West River Parkway. The bicyclist apparently was headed to a nearby bicycle path when he was hit by a pickup truck, said Sgt. William Palmer.

The bicyclist was crossing the intersection, heading east, when he was struck by the northbound vehicle, which did not stop after the accident, Palmer said.

Police had asked for the public's help in locating the truck with Minnesota license plates RXJ308, listed to a 1996 Dodge Dakota pickup.

The truck also had an Army-insignia star and the letter-number combination "M16" or "M18" on the rear tailgate, according to police.

Just before 8:30 p.m., the driver turned himself in at police headquarters, Palmer said. The driver had left the truck in north Minneapolis, and police recovered it.

The suspect, who was booked into the Hennepin County jail Saturday night, is a 27-year-old man from northeast Minneapolis. He has a history of driving, burglary, drug and trespassing offenses when younger, state court and motor-vehicle records show.

Convictions include disorderly conduct in Ramsey County in 2008, operating an off-highway motorcycle in Mille Lacs County in 2005, and second-degree assault in Hennepin County in 2001, when he was 17.

Police would not provide any information Saturday night on how they learned his license plate number.
