Donations drive for Mpls. tornado victims planned for Saturday

  • Updated: June 9, 2011 - 11:49 PM

A one-day donation drive for victims of the May 22 tornado in north Minneapolis will be held Saturday, organized through a Facebook page that has become a widely used go-to site for information and help in the storm's aftermath.

The drive will be held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, with a collection base at 2818 Washington Av. N., according to organizer Peter Kerre, a former Minnesotan who started the Facebook site, which has thousands of followers, from his home in New York City.

These items are sought: nonperishable foods such as canned goods, hygiene products, gift cards, pet food and bottled water. Please do not bring clothes, toys, hardware, furniture or appliances, organizers said; those items will be collected later.

Organizers' goal is to make the drive one of the biggest one-day collections ever, Kerre said. They hope that in addition to individuals, companies, college students and other organizations will marshal their forces to bring in goods.

All donations will go to first responders for distribution to victims within 24 to 48 hours, Kerre said.
