Minneapolis police said Wednesday that a 13-year-old boy allegedly sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl while the two were on the bus headed home from school.

Police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer said the boy allegedly forced the girl to perform a sex act. Following an investigation, the boy was taken to juvenile detention. Palmer would not say whether there were witnesses, citing an ongoing investigation.

The bus was headed home from Sheridan Arts Magnet, 1201 University Av. NE. According to a police report filed Tuesday morning, "a male student was sitting next to a female student with his penis out." The two were interviewed by police, the report said.

In a phone call to parents, Sheridan principal Al Pitt said: "We received a report that a student may have sexually assaulted another student during the afternoon bus run. We take these types of allegations very seriously and the matter is currently under investigation with the Minneapolis Police Department."
