The Minnesota State Fair began winding down its 2013 run on Sunday with cool temperatures providing pleasant relief. While Will Bollum of Northfield, led his Limosin heifer, Zarah, to the judging barn, Christian Netzke of Lamberton touched her up with some black spray dye.

On its 12th and final day — a cool, dry, glorious day — the Minnesota State Fair welcomed a record crowd for the second day in a row, the fair reported Tuesday.

164,277 people came to the fair Monday, a record for 12th-day attendance. On Sunday, also a cool day, 236,197 came through the fair gates, setting a record not just for 11th-day attendance, but for single-day attendance throughout the fair’s history.

The weekend’s really big crowds followed a midweek slump attributed to very hot, humid weather. Total attendance for this year was 1,731,162, fair officials said. That’s slightly less than last year’s total, 1,788,512. The all-time record for total fair attendance was set in 2009, when 1,790,497 people came through the gates.
