A 28-year-old Cottage Grove man was in custody Saturday after a four-hour standoff overnight with police at his house with a 2-year-old child inside.

The girl was physically unharmed after the ordeal and was returned to her mother, according to Capt. Pete Koerner of the Cottage Grove Police Department.

Cottage Grove police were sent to a house in the 7400 block of 96th Street about 11:40 p.m. Friday after gunshots were reported. Police heard another gunshot when they arrived and spotted a man who lived at the home at the back of the house.

When confronted by police, Koerner said, the man went inside. After police made contact with other people inside the house, two women carrying an infant came out. The man refused to come out, and police were told the 2-year-old girl was still inside. They surrounded the house and tried to contact the man, Koerner said.

The Washington County Special Response Team, made up of officers from the county and more than half a dozen cities, was called to the scene. After an arrest warrant was obtained, officers entered the home around 3:45 a.m. Saturday. The suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Washington County jail in Stillwater pending formal charges.

The girl was found safe.
