A St. Paul man has been charged with fifth-degree assault and interfering with a 911 call after he allegedly assaulted a quadruple amputee with whom he shared an apartment.

Jacoby L. Smith, 33, allegedly assaulted the woman because he was angry that she had blocked his view of the TV, according to the complaint filed this week in Ramsey County District Court.

Police were called to their apartment in the 1000 block of Jessie Street shortly before 7 a.m. Monday. They found the victim sitting in a wheelchair and saw that "all four of her limbs were amputated, her arms below the elbow and her legs above the knee," the complaint said.

She told officers that Smith had thrown her to the floor and punched her in the face more than 10 times. When she tried to call 911, Smith took her cell phone, the complaint said.

The victim said she eventually persuaded Smith to take her to a SuperAmerica store so she could get some ice to put on her face. There, the victim told the clerk to call 911 and Smith fled, the complaint said.
