Hudson police unclear on why dad shot at son, friends

Last update: October 20, 2009 - 5:45 PM

Daniel Christenson remained in critical condition Monday, as authorities tried to solve why he chased after his son and three teenagers with a gun.

Hudson, Wis., police revealed no new details in the case, and no charges have been filed. Christenson, 43, fired gunshots at his 19-year-old son, Zach, and three of his teenage friends, ages 13 to 15, Saturday evening, authorities said. The friends hid in a basement closet as Zach distracted his dad, and later broke a window to free his friends.

Christenson and Zach argued before the shooting, authorities said. The elder Christenson had been drinking, according to Hudson police The teenagers were able to escape shortly after 6 p.m. One teenager was bitten in the arm by a St. Croix County sheriff's police dog, authorities said, and suffered minor injuries.

Chemical canisters were launched into the home about 1 a.m. Sunday when Christenson refused to cooperate. He tried to leave through the back door, and fired at least one shot at a deputy. Two St. Croix County Sheriff's deputies returned fire, according to the sheriff's office. Christenson was wounded in the stomach and chest.

Neighbors said Monday that Christenson and his son moved in about a year ago. Neighbors were not very familiar with the family, but authorities said they have been called to the home in the past for incidents involving father and son.

"It took the whole neighborhood by surprise," said Denny Lee, who lives nearby. "We just wish them both the best."
