Hastings Veterans Home deficient in controlling finances, audit finds

Last update: September 24, 2009 - 9:32 PM

Operators of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Hastings failed to adequately control its finances during a 32-month period ending in March, according to a report released Thursday by the state's Legislative Auditor.

The audit of the 175-bed home, one of five in the state, found the home "generally had adequate internal controls" to safeguard its finances.

However, it pointed out 14 deficiencies in such areas as payroll and cash management.

Those record-keeping and financial flaws ranged from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, the audit found.

The home's administrator responded to the auditor's office by saying that the deficiencies have either been corrected or that staff members are in the process of doing so.
